Caliche
See the white dirt,
it’s called caliche.
Such ancient dirt
from shallow seas.
The cedar trees,
the black limbed live oaks.
This is my land,
this is my country.
Do you need a ride
to my Texas dream?
It sure is sweet.
I leave a seat
for Michael Hurley,
I leave a seat
for little Bertie.
I thought that you
might need a flashlight.
Yes, we will stay
for Sounds of Honey
Do you need a ride
To my Texas dream?
It sure is sweet.
This is the place
I met Dan and Trevor.
This is the place
I saw the moonrise rise
and sang for truth,
for the revealing,
sing for your crush,
and sing for healing.
Do you need a ride
To my Texas dream?
It sure is sweet.
The Cloud and the Snail
Does the cloud even see the snail?
Crushed on the driveway.
The sadness is in the sound
of having to go that way.
Does the earth feel the weight of me?
The burden of my two feet?
The weight of my sorrow?
Better tomorrow.
Nothing is special.
Nothing is new.
I’m riding horses
through the drive-thru.
Is it all wasted time
to ride for the feeling?
Being young and running around,
not really trying.
Lost in the current.
Found on the internet.
I wish it was memorable.
The Crystal Cave
Crawling through
the crystal cave.
Long gone,
light of the day.
Don’t be afraid.
There might be rain,
but I am here with you.
Leaving the world
in the dead of night
My body grows long
The passage is tight.
It’s a secret place
in the green belt.
Enter as one,
leave as something else.
Don’t be afraid.
There might be rain
but I am here with you
No turning back.
Who’s to say,
we’ll get out alive.
Silvery rock and dying headlights.
Don’t be afraid.
There might be rain
but I am here with you
Dark Pleasure of Endless Doing
I woke up confused like,
what has happened to all my free time?
I did a lot of things,
ceaselessly,
endlessly.
I made a habit of keeping up and looking cool.
I didn’t come here to improve the situation,
to solve things,
to fix things,
to share what’s on my mind,
only to celebrate my aliveness.
to absorb and empty out,
absorb and empty out.
Feel free
Bridle my pony without cruelty,
lead her back to the path when she has strayed,
hold her head as we walk,
feel her heaving sides,
her strength,
her gait.
Wonder and wander,
be untethered
with our only connection
to our senses and eachother
even if the path we ride is an endless circle
let us trust
Either Way
Either way, my heart knows
What is right
and so I’ll go
Either way.
Either way, close my eyes
Find each step
I can trust my mind
Either way.
Either way, the body knows
Where to go
And I’ll follow
Either way.
Either way, I will change
And love myself
all the same.
Either way.
Either way, I’ll be good
And I’ll find peace
And I am whole
Either way.
That’s the end.
The Gate
I built a a gate for my grief to go freely.
I’m not meant to contain wild horses.
I see them run and I feel their hot breath, alive.
I can’t pen them in and I can’t let them go.
Oh to be among their warm bodies,
I cry every day drawing from the infinite well of tears.
I see them run and I feel their hot breath, alive.
I can’t pen them in and I can’t let them go.
The Golden Hour
Walk with me in the golden hour
We can hold each others hands, it’s the golden hour
I don’t believe it’s over yet, it’s the golden hour
Flowing like the ocean, in the golden hour
Feel the crazy wisdom of the golden hour
Tell someone you love them, it’s the golden hour
And my black dogs running in the golden hour
And the answers begging questions of the golden hour
Twinkling in my heart light in the golden hour
Ghosts and meditations, it’s the golden hour
And I’m watching for the second arrow in the golden hour
And the ever loving mystery of the golden hour
Honey Island General Store
Meet me at the Honey Island General Store,
They have just what I was looking for.
You said you lost your will to dance,
But I think you’ll find your steps again.
People they been telling me I waited too long
But the joke’s on them.
I was just taking my time.
Meet me at the Honey Island General Store,
You can lose it all and always get some more.
Sometimes I think there’s not enough for me,
But I remember you told me it’s infinity,
it’s ambient and it’s real and it’s always around,
And it’s what I’ve found,
By taking my time.
In Dreams
Cover me in stars, tuck in my arms.
I'm in the cockpit, I won't try to stop it.
This time I’ll leave the ground.
I've finally found the way out.
In dreams, in dream I can talk to you, dreams.
In dreams, in dreams you are listening, dreams.
Thinking back on Arkansas,
sitting on the countertop,
a midnight visitation.
We knew who it was,
someone who'd left us recently.
And do you believe that gone's really gone?
Or can you send a message back to the ones you love, in dreams?
In dreams, in dream I can talk to you, dreams.
In dreams, in dreams you are listening, dreams.
And how long has it been, since I sang the third on Promised Land?
It keeps things real for me in strange society, I'm not the only one.
And there's nothing else to do, but sit across from you, talking on the phones.
I wish I had been there when things got you down.
and time took her hands and spangled you with mica.
In dreams, in dream I can talk to you, dreams.
In dreams, in dreams you are listening, dreams.
Lake Texoma
When it rains and grass grows in that place again, I always think of you, ever the optimist.
It was you who thought I could fly an airplane,
calling everyone you knew to tell ‘em about the thing.
Remember the day you drove the boat to Oklahoma,
all the way across Lake Texoma, like going around the world.
It was you, who never stopped loving Dallas, or the Beatles like a religion,
or a man’s holy right
to drive a car
to find the right
kind of cheese
to make grits.
Don’t wait.
Don’t wait.
Don’t wait.
